BloggingPro China » Blog Archive » WordPress Plugin: Peter’s Custom Anti-Spam Image says:
[...] What pisses me off about this is that yet again, ordinary net users end up paying the price for other people’s selfishness. It’s a doddle to flood blogs with spam and it doesn’t cost a thing to do it, but the people on the receiving end are the ones who need to spend time getting shot of the shit. I’m researching an article this morning and I’ve encountered stacks of sites that had similar problems and either made registration compulsory for commenters – something I don’t want to do, because it deters people from joining in – or disabled comments altogether, which removes all the fun from blogging. The level of spam’s not so bad that I’m considering doing either (although I am considering a word verification system – this one looks nice. What do you think?), but I’m hugely pissed off at yet another example of a small group of selfish bastards ruining the internet for everyone else. [...]

[...] Further to the comment spam post a few days ago, the level of junk’s got increasingly silly (cleared lots of spam last night, another 50-odd waiting for me this morning). So I’ve added Peter’s Custom Anti-Spam system, which seems to be one of the more elegant anti-spam efforts. It shouldn’t make a difference if you’re registered – you can ignore the word recognition thing – but non-registered users need to type the appropriate word to leave a comment. Sorry, it’s a pain, but the spam’s taking up too much of my time. [...]

[...] Been receiving tremendous amount of blog post spam from spambots lately. Some of them even extend more than 100 lines or so with useless advertisement links. I have written about this before but I still can’t believe how stupid the posts are — there are two spam posts that I get a lot i.e. “You have good guest book” and the other one says, “You have good site, what is your designer? I wants become friends with you.” (Yes, with broken English and all) I have since installed Peter’s Anti Spam Image plugin — those of you who comment now have to type in a word that is shown in the image box. I chose this plugin because it does not discrimate against users who have cookies disabled and I can pick my own fun random words to display. Sorry for the inconvenience and the extra field to type in but those pesky spammers just spoil it for everyone. I know it won’t stop spammers but it may reduce some of the spam from those pesky spambots on the net. [...]

Spam killer plugins I used this 2006 | The Four-eyed Journal – On technology, the web, health and life says:
[...] Peter’s Custom Anti-spam plugin came into servicing my blog during the blog reboot I had last week in which The Four-eyed Journal was re-born. I chose this spam preventing plugin because it prevents spam from being posted to begin with instead of just eating it up until I manually delete it. It’s based on a Captcha-like visual confirmation setup in which commenters are required to enter some text from a graphic that only humans could read. Results were excellent, my blog was virtually spam-less overnight. [...]

Pinoy Blogosphere » Blog Archive » How to Completely Block Comment Spam in Your WordPress Blog? says:
[...] The latest versions of WordPress installations come with Akismet, a spam-filtering plugin for WordPress. Akismet can be very useful especially in filtering spam comments containing numerous links, which are always a feature of spam messages. Unfortunately, it fails to do its job sometimes for flagging proper comments as spam. So it would be necessary to check the filtered spam for this error. Problems arise when you got a lot of spam, say hundreds or thousands, to review. It would take you a lot of time, or it maybe impossible for the blogger to finish checking all those spam. You cannot just delete these comments because you might disappoint your readers. Some comments may also contain important things such as a link exchange request, a relevant link to your post, etc. I added Peter’s Custom Anti-Spam and recently I found Bad Behavior, which is quite a good one. Bad Behavior blocks automated spambots access to your WordPress blog. This plugin is also available for other PHP-based websites. So far, I only get 1 or 2 spam comments per week after I have installed this plugin. At least, I don’t have to worry on checking hundreds of spam comments filtered by Akismet. But there’s one thing that bothers me in using this plugin. According to what I have read few days ago that it can blog some “human” visitors from commenting to your posts or accessing your site. Please report it to me if you have experienced this. Thanks. [...]
[...] Anyway, I’ve installed a anti spam from Peter useful’s crap and thanks to his Version 2.6: Peter’s Custom Anti-Spam Image Plugin for WordPress , I hope I can reduce those junks coming in. So basically if now you want to put a comment on my blog, all you need to do is to key in the image generated code to prove that you’re a real human posting an actual comment. I know this will not be 100% but it’s better than nothing. [...]
[...] Death to Comment Spam Over the past month or so I had been getting inundated with comment spam, and for whatever reason, the amount of crap mail I get really seems to have gone up over the past week in particular. In response to this, I went and installed a captcha word verification plugin so that only real human beings can fill out the comment form instead of spambots. You’d think this would come standard with with word press, but then again neither does spell checking. In any event, I decided to go with Peter’s Custom Anti-Spam because its much more customizable than any of the others that I came across. I was even able to set my own words, colors, and font sizes for it! And so far, not a single comment spam yet! [...]
[...] It was brought to my attention that my two commenters (Jeff and Alexis) were being blocked by my site! Anyhow, I installed a pretty Captcha plugiin. Please let me know if it works! [...] Here is what the problem is (I think) and how to get around it. First the problem: I think it may be unique to the style of my template, which is a pretty common one called K2. I think it is the main one that WordPress uses, but I could be wrong. Anyway, when you add Peter’s Custom Anti-spam Image Plug-in for WordPress, which is the name of that cool plug-in that Fab has, the template and the plug-in do not get along. Especially if you are a frequent visitor. Anyway, the way to get around it is that in the comment section, it will say “Welcome back,” and then your name if you have told it to remember you in the past. Next to that, it will say “(change)”. Click on that and the boxes with your name, blog url, email address and the anti-spam image and entry box will all appear. You don’t need to change any of your contact information, just enter the anti-spam word that you see and your comment and all is right with the world. If there continues to be problems with it, please let me know. [...]

[...] Peter’s Custom Anti-Spam is a Captcha plugin, i.e. it displays some text as a picture, requiring the text be input into the provided field. Evidently, protects only comments. Not 100% efficient, as there are bots able to read images. Fortunately, the majority cannot . This plugin is only one from many, and I chose it for no specific reasons – except that it is “fresh”, requires no additional accounts hosted somewhere, and is rather small. [...] With this new blog I was quickly troubled with blog spam, which was hardly a problem at all with my old Blogger blog. That was probably because in Blogger I had word verification turned on, and this makes automatic spamming rather difficult, although it did cause certain problems. On the new blog I first installed the Akismet plugin; this is very good at recognising spam, but does nothing to stop it arriving in the first place. So, on the advice of Eddie, I installed Peter’s Custom Anti-Spam, a WordPress plugin which provides a word verification system similar to, but simpler than, the Blogger system. I customised this with a set of biblical names, which hopefully spammers will neither guess nor read with OCR programs. For the moment this seems to have stopped my spam, but we will see. I hope it is does not put off genuine commenters – try it and see! [...]

Thanks.

The mods were spending most of their time deleting hundreds of spam links instead of doing the the good mod tasks of making sure that all NSFW links were marked and such. David started a thread in the forums asking for suggestions and help, and I suggested using a CAPTCHA image and also recommended using Peter’s Custom Anti-Spam Image Plugin for WordPress as a basis (no need to re-invent the wheel afterall). There was some discussion about it being too much work and that the plugin wouldn’t work out of the box (no kidding), and eventually I said I would do it. [...]

Speaker of Truth » New blog takes shape says:
