Well, old thread.....but I wanted to say that I used my (unlocked) SpeakOut GSM phone during a trip through the US in 2011 with no problem.

Bought an AT&T sim card cheap off ebay and activated it by calling up AT&T customer service in the States and adding some airtime with my Canadian credit card. Think it cost me about $15.....

Pretty much any Rogers unlocked GSM phone will work with AT&T pay-as-you go in the States, and the phone gives you nationwide calling on the AT&T network, so no roaming because it's prepaid service. I found very few deadspots in the USA....

Thanks for your prompt response, Peter. I did call the Customer Rep. at 7-11 Speakout, she told me that this phone can only be used within Canada. I did enquire further but she was very firm and said there's no way the phone will work in the U.S. But I'll certainly look into what you said about getting a SIM card while in the US.

Hi Catherine,

You can usually buy a cheap SIM card while in the US, such as a T-Mobile card at a US 7-Eleven (not that you need to be loyal to 7-Eleven). As long as the wireless band requirements match, you could then swap that SIM card into your existing phone. You could also ask at http://www.speakoutwireless.ca/speak — I know that a lot of users on that forum have a similar issue.

I go to the US two three times a year, each for a couple of days and I'd like to have a cellphone to use while going there but my 7-11 Speakout cannot be used outside of Canada. Would you have any suggestions for me? Thanks so much.
