To minimize those costs, speak on incoming for less than 1 minute, then hang up and call them back for free.

You can educate your regular callers just to let the call ring once or twice and hang up, and you call them back from the call display for free.

In Canada it doesn't make sense to use the magic jack as your main line. It does make complete sense to use it for making all of your long distance calls. THis way it will save you long distance charges and will have no impact on others trying to call you.

Correct. If you get a magicJack with a US number, you will be charged long distance to call that number. For a service with a Canadian number, you should be looking at other VoIP services that typically cost more ($10+ per month).

I am in Canada. If I have a US number, how does this affect those people calling me locally? Do they incur a long distance charge? For example, my son calls home from school 2 blocks away, will he have to dial long distance? And will he(the school) be charged long distance? What if I am out shopping and I have to call home and I use the pay phone, Will I have to put in enough coins to cover long distance since I have a US number? Please advise..would like to purchase the magicjack, but I don't want everyone calling me locally to be charged?
