I have just discovered that Magicjack as a company are a ripoff. I bought mine with the 5 year. I was told that the ability to get Canadian numbers was available. Then when I got it there wasn't any available. So then I found out they were working on it. Now it's available and they want $10 to switch, $10 for new number and they want to charge $10 every year for the number. I told them on the live chat they were wrong to say it would be free to change later, so he clips and pastes the "we reserve the right to change whenever we want" crap up on my chat box. What a joke these people are…

I have had a MJ for the last year and a half and think it's one of the best purchases I have ever made. Yes, you need to keep your computer on in order to receive/make phone calls, but what I did was buy a thin client for about 50 bucks off Ebay. I hooked this up to my internet and then plugged the MJ in and connected my cordless phone. I put it all in a closet out of the way. It works great.

One of the great things about using a thin client is that if the power ever goes off, you don't physically have to turn it back on, like you would most computers. It automatically turns back on and therefore, your MJ boots back up.

Canadian numbers are readily available, although, not for every area code. I finally got one for Ottawa, so now my annual phone bill will be 25 bucks a year. Love it.

Can anyone tell me. Do you have to have your computer on all the time for the MJ to work. I am mainly thinking of its usage to mimic a landline. Will I have to keep my laptop on or will it work if I am shut down or on stand by as long as the laptop is still plugged in and hooked up to the internet? Please let me know as I am seriously considering this option.

Thanks!

Just bought my MJ two days ago at London Drugs in winnipeg, Mb. So far things are working out great, A little bulky running off my lap top but plan to hook it up to my desk top soon. Have made about thirty calls so far and everyone says i sound clear, payed the extra 10$ for manitoba # and it is worth every penny. I make several calls to states and across canada so it will pay for itself in no time.

Canadian numbers are available for an additional $10/year. I initially set up my MJ with a US number, but then decided to pay the $5 fee to change the number and the $10 fee for the Cdn number. I did this because I will be using the MJ when I travel in my RV - mainly with a laptop and aircard.

At this point, I wouldn’t count on Canadian numbers on a magicJack being a viable option any time soon. Depending on your needs, you could spend a bit more for a number at les.net or voip.ms, then use a free software phone or buy a hardware VoIP phone. There is a bit of a learning curve there, although some Googling will probably turn up some how-tos.

I would suggest vbuzzer.com (especially for Canadian numbers).
