Custom Anti-Spam & Akismet

Since I installed Anti-Spam, Akismet has not shown me any blocked spam comments in the wordpress dashboard (what a relief!!), Nevertheless, Akismet's spam counter has steadily kept going up, to the tune of around 500 since I installed your software 24 hours ago, which would be the amount I had received lately in a day.

Now I have a silly question (I'm notoriously nosey, but also blonde!!): Is Akismet ok to run alongside Custom Anti-Spam? I'm baffled about the large number, but also a little anxious about legitimate comments going straight into the black hole.

I apologize if I should not pose these questions to you at all, but rather to Akismet... But you were so kind and quick with your last reply that it encouraged me to contact you again... sowwy! ;)

I just realised this thread was created twice... I think that happened because the first time round I encountered an error and the page wouldn't load.. I'm sorry!!

(Don't worry, I'll delete your double post.)

I know a lot of people have successfully combined Akismet and my anti-spam word plugin, but I never investigated into the Akismet spam count (I foolishly use only my plugin). The way it should work is that my plugin blocks most comments and those that get through are analyzed by Akismet. However, maybe Akismet still jumps ahead? When I get the time, I'll do some testing.

Test some comments yourself by visiting your site when not logged in. If your comments show up properly, there probably isn't much to worry about. Perhaps someone who's been using both plugins in tandem can provide some insight?

Hi again,

I followed your advice to place the captcha above the submit button, but I don't think that had any effect. The spam count still continues to sky-rocket phenomenally (by my standards, anyway!). Anyway, don't keep worrying about it, because if someone 'important' gets wiped out he or she will let me know, otherwise it's probably not worth the hassle.

Thanks again for your help! :)

Oh, hehehe, what I meant was that the custom anti-spam script should process the comment before Akismet -- this you have no control over :P

Anyway, I'll write a reply in this thread when I get the chance to investigate :D

I installed Akismet to test and couldn't duplicate the "increasing spam count" problem. The only time the Akismet spam count went up was when I purposely added a ton of links in a comment, imitating a spam message (which Akismet successfully caught).

If anybody has any insights on Sabine's situation, let us know!
