Peter’s Date Countdown: widget style!

Update: I have finally merged the widget and non-widget versions of the plugin, so get it from the original Peter’s Date Countdown page.

    Great to see that you made of widget of the plugin. I’ve been waiting for just that :)

    Thanks Peter!

    PS. Is there a reason why you use a php file for event configuration instead of the database? DS.

  2. Missakins says:

    php file has a configuration for this. If you are trying to arrange your files in a certain way, change the stuff inside the quotes to be right for your setup…

    // Change this to be the path to the date file in the plugins directory

    (should work as this by default)
    datecount_path = “wp-content/plugins/widgets/datecountdowndates.php”;

  3. Vishwas says:

    The plugin works like a charm on WP 2.05 – Thank your for making it. Just wanted a feature request.

    Currently the plugin displays xx sleeps until , ofcourse that could be easily changed by editing the php file to something like xx days left to

    But why dont you add a simple function where we could edit it without modifying the main php file. One more feature I’d like to see is to change the default display from xx days/sleeps left to to something more customizable like xx days yy hrs zz min aa seconds to ..

  4. Vishwas says:

    Thank you for incorporating an easy way to modify the “sleeps left” text. I have some problem adding time zone difference. Currently I’m in GMT +5.5. But when I enter 5.5 or +5.5 as the time difference in the php file, the final countdown widget shows the difference as 0.5

    Am I doing something wrong over here?

    Now eagerly awaiting your next release where I suggest you might add a customizable countdown timer. For e.g: XX days YY hours ZZ minutes left for event

    is the “link” able to link back to a post or is it an external http link only..

    i would like a countdown to a possible event that i will be posting about.. if that makes sense..

  6. Paul Oyler says:

    I also got these errors and nothing else (all files are located in the plugins/widgets folder):

    Warning: fopen(../wp-content/plugins/widgets/datecountdowndates.php) [function.fopen]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /home/nascarb/public_html/wp-content/plugins/widgets/datecountdownwidget.php on line 151

    Warning: fclose(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource in /home/nascarb/public_html/wp-content/plugins/widgets/datecountdownwidget.php on line 153

  7. Paul says:

    The plugin/widget is working fine on the front page but isn’t on subsequent pages. Am I doing something wrong?

  8. Peter says:

    Paul’s problem with sub-pages is now fixed in the newest 1.9 release. Paul Oyler’s problem was that datecountdowndates.php wasn’t writable (which it needs to be).

    please help someone, what to do??

  10. Peter says:

    Problem was solved by making datecountdowndates.php writable…

  11. Drumbo says:

    Hi Peter,

    I was wondering if you might be able to advise why my datecountdown is not visible in sub pages. I am running the latest version, I use the java version and I have ensured that the file is writable. I can see the “the subject of the countdown”, but the actual countdown is not visible.

    Thanks in advance

  12. Anderson says:

    I have the same problem that Vishwas have.
    Can u help me?

    tks,

  13. Andrew says:

    Just curious if this is WP 2.2 compatible? If so, I’m not sure where to install… the sidebar widgets plugin is deprecated since widgets are built in, and there is no plugins/widgets directory. Thanks so much for developing this.

  14. Peter says:

    Yes, it is compatible with WP 2.2. You can just create a plugins/widgets directory and then dump this plugin’s files in there :D

  15. Andrew says:

    That works great – thanks!

  16. Fu4ny says:

    I love this plugin and the java countdown
    But when the event ended, I want the countdown display “x days y hours…. since the event”. Only the normal countdown do it, and the java countdown will not display like this.
    I can simple edit the java file, it is a simple code.
    if (days ' + days + ' ' + sleeps + dps + ' ';
    pdc_div.innerHTML += 'since ' + textevent;
    }
    else {
    pdc_div.innerHTML = '' + days + ' ' + sleeps + dps + ' ';
    pdc_div.innerHTML += hours + 'h' + ' ';
    pdc_div.innerHTML += minutes + 'm' + ' ';
    pdc_div.innerHTML += seconds + 's' + ' ';
    pdc_div.innerHTML += 'until ' + textevent;
    }

  17. Paul Oyler says:

    Is there a way we can change the font size and alignment of the java countdown? On Red-oak.org we would like to have this in a large font, centered at the top. We’ve got it placed where we want it in the header, but we can’t get it to center nor can we figure out how to enlarge the font size.

  18. Peter says:

    I’ve answered Paul’s question here

  19. CWFGameCast says:

    I just want to thank you for this plugin and making it a widget. I love it. I needed a countdown plugin and found it tonight. A quick install later followed by 15 minutes of adding dates of conventions resulted in a great list of countdowns for my visitors.

    Now they won't forget about attending their favorite cons. There's just one thing I wish I could change. The phrasing of "x more sleeps until event." I'm less than enthusiastic about the word sleeps and would love to change that to something else. How do I do that?

  20. Peter says:

    Hi CWFGameCast — you can change the word "sleeps" in the plugin file here:

    // Set this to the singular and plural form of days (for both non-JavaScript and JavaScript countdowns)
    $pdc_text['day'] = "sleep";
    $pdc_text['days'] = "sleeps";

  21. Tracey says:

    Will this work with 2.6.1?

  22. Peter says:

    Hi Tracey, yes it should.
